A SRI LANKAN SATINWOOD OCCASIONAL TRIPOD TABLE
18th century
On three stylized scrolling feet, knobbed central column and flipping top.
H. 75 x diam. 68 cm
Note:
Sri Lanka has long been celebrated for the ubiquity and the quality of its timbers, many of which were very suitable for the manufacture of furniture. The best known include satinwood, ebony, calamander, jackwood, coconut and tamarind but there are many more as is shown by the so-called specimen-wood top tables. These tables, made during the second half of the 19th century on Sri Lanka, can have up to ninety different examples of costly Sri Lankan woods inlaid on the top of the table.
