A fine Sri Lankan coromandel wood and cane settee
Second half 18th century
The back sculpted, of plain style, the flamed wood nicely in line with the form of the bench.

This settee is illustrated in Furniture of the Dutch Period in Ceylon by R.L.Brohier, plate XV, fig. 1, where it is described as “This restrained model in settee of beautiful fragile lines blending beauty with utility, is as near as one gets in colonial Dutch furniture to old English Chippendale and Heppelwhite conventions”.
