A CHINESE BLUE AND WHITE PORCELAIN 'TWO HERRING' DISH
Qianlong period, 3rd quarter 18th century
The rectangular molded dish, centrally decorated with two herrings, surrounded by a floral motif border.
24.5 x 17.5 cm
Note:
The 'Herring' dish is a typical example of Chinese porcelain for the Dutch market, based on a Dutch delftware original. Raw herring, since long, has been the favourite national food for the Dutch. Dishes with one herring are more common than the ones with two, like the present one. In the collection of the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag there is another one with two herring (see Chinese ceramiek, 1976, cat.no. 296).
