Japan, 20th century, after the 18th-century original
Colour (distempered) on paper, using the doro-é technique, H. 53.8 x W. 110 cm
This is a copy after the original map owned by Viscount Tadakazu Matsudaira, the original unfortunately being lost in World War II. This sketch map depicts the Imari warehouse (constructed in 1662), the Kanban warehouse (constructed in 1696) and the flagstaff standing behind the Opperhoofd’s house.
This dates the original map to the early 18th century. Other copies of the original sketch map are in the Matsuura Historical Museum in Hirado, in the Kobe City Museum in Kobe, and in the Tanaka Keiji Collection in the Risshõ University Library, Tokyo.
