A walnut veneer on oak strong box (coffre fort) or 'captain's chest with brass mounts

 

Flanders or France, late 17th/early 18th century
 

Behind the fall front two drawers with secret boxes above, on the underside of the lid, behind a flap a space for small letters and two more hidden boxes, with long screws in the side panels to be screwed on a table, for stability or against thieves, the brass mounts with fleur-de-lis motif.
